Nature, and her far-reaching influence, is everywhere at Ockenden Manor. Nothing calms the mind and feeds the soul as a connection to nature does.

Set in nine acres of Sussex park and woodland, with uninterrupted views of Cuckfield Park, it’s impossible to stay here without doing so.

This is a hotel of two halves. Surround yourself in the Elizabethan glamour of oak panelled rooms and intricately stained-glass windows in this opulent manor house. Indulge in fine dining and breathe in the history.

Step into the 19th century walled garden and a 21st century architect’s dream awaits. The spa. The clean, modern lines of the contemporary extension are in stunning contrast with the surroundings of prime Sussex countryside. The magic continues. The spa is fed by the hotel’s own underground natural spring. There is only one thing on the agenda here – pampering and absolute relaxation. That’s it. Nothing more.

And relax…

Sussex’s Nyman Gardens

Set in the High Weald with splendid views, the garden is a series of experimental designs with spectacular planting and beauty all year. Both a horticulturalist’s dream and a peaceful country garden, it is easy to lose yourself in its intimate and surprising corners.

The house, transformed into a Gothic mansion in the 1920s, burnt down shortly after, leaving romantic ruins. The remaining rooms are unexpectedly charming, and filled with flowers from the garden as Anne Messel, Countess of Rosse had them.

Ancient woods beyond the garden dip into the valley, with walks among avenues, wild flowers, the lake and cascades.

The Bluebell Railway

The Bluebell is a heritage steam railway running through the glorious Sussex countryside with a station on Gravetye’s doorstep. As the name suggests, at the right time of year swathes of bluebells line the tracks. William Robinson (the horticulturalist who created the gardens at Gravetye) would throw bulbs from the moving train to encourage the flowers.

The Bluebell Railway was the first preserved standard gauge passenger line in the world.

Sheffield Park Station is the best point to join the Bluebell Railway. This is situated on the A275 East Grinstead – Lewes main road, about two miles north of its junction with the A272. The Bluebell Railway, Sheffield Park is well signposted with brown tourist direction signs from the A22 and A23 trunk roads. There is plenty of available parking at Sheffield Park as well as a coach park and disabled bays.
