The gardens of England are world famous, and nowhere could be better located for visiting many of the finest and most memorable than the luxury Ockenden Manor, in the heart of West Sussex.

This lovely Elizabethan manor house is itself set in nine acres of gardens, with far-reaching views over the South Downs. This luxury hotel is tucked away down a quiet, winding lane in the unspoiled and charming village of Cuckfield. Ockenden Manor is perfectly situated for touring the great gardens of Sussex and Kent, from Leonardslee and Nymans to Wakehurst and Sissinghurst. Chartwell and Hever Castle are also within easy reach. The great open spaces of the South Downs attract horse riders, golfers and walkers, or those whose idea of perfect sightseeing is drifting in a hot-air balloon.

Less active pastimes could include antique-hunting in Cuckfield or the famous ‘Lanes’ of Brighton, with total indulgence in the village’s beauty salon as another option. Dining in Ockenden’s splendidly panelled Michelin-starred restaurant, which is both welcoming and elegant, makes the perfect end to the day.

Set within the walled gardens at Ockenden Manor is a brand new luxury Spa with stunning views across a tranquil wooded valley. The facilities offered to you are an indoor/outdoor linked swimming pool, sauna, steam room, rain shower, Ispod, hot tub, gym, treatment rooms and relaxation room.

Sussex’s Nyman Gardens

Set in the High Weald with splendid views, the garden is a series of experimental designs with spectacular planting and beauty all year. Both a horticulturalist’s dream and a peaceful country garden, it is easy to lose yourself in its intimate and surprising corners.

The house, transformed into a Gothic mansion in the 1920s, burnt down shortly after, leaving romantic ruins. The remaining rooms are unexpectedly charming, and filled with flowers from the garden as Anne Messel, Countess of Rosse had them.

Ancient woods beyond the garden dip into the valley, with walks among avenues, wild flowers, the lake and cascades.

The Bluebell Railway

The Bluebell is a heritage steam railway running through the glorious Sussex countryside with a station on Gravetye’s doorstep. As the name suggests, at the right time of year swathes of bluebells line the tracks. William Robinson (the horticulturalist who created the gardens at Gravetye) would throw bulbs from the moving train to encourage the flowers.

The Bluebell Railway was the first preserved standard gauge passenger line in the world.

Sheffield Park Station is the best point to join the Bluebell Railway. This is situated on the A275 East Grinstead – Lewes main road, about two miles north of its junction with the A272. The Bluebell Railway, Sheffield Park is well signposted with brown tourist direction signs from the A22 and A23 trunk roads. There is plenty of available parking at Sheffield Park as well as a coach park and disabled bays.
