Attractions Near Farlam Hall Hotel & Restaurant

Hadrian’s Wall

Farlam Hall is ideally placed to explore the Western part of Hadrian’s Wall.

A World Heritage Site since 1987, Hadrian’s Wall is an astounding feat of engineering. It is the best known and the best-preserved frontier of the Roman Empire. When Hadrian’s men set out to construct it, they were faced with a relentlessly challenging and variable landscape to conquer. Not the fierce torrents of fast rivers, the hard rock of the Whin Sill, nor mile upon mile of rolling hills would defeat them. The Wall is Britain’s most impressive and most important Roman monument. Together with the Antonine Wall and the Upper German Raetian Limes, it forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site ‘Frontiers of the Roman Empire.’

Just 7 miles from Farlam Hall lies Birdoswald, the longest remaining stretch of the Wall. Here you’ll find amazing views and walks, with the Wall stretching as far as the eye can see along stunning countryside. The site has recently undergone major renovation work, with a fascinating exhibition centre now telling the story of the Wall with hands-on fun and games for little ones.

Talkin Tarn Country Park

Talkin Tarn Country Park is around 10 minutes drive from the hotel. There is a 65 acre lake set amid 120 acres of farmland and woodland. The tarn is glacial in origin, being formed about 10000 years ago, and is fed by underground streams. You can sail, windsurf, canoe or hire one of the wooden rowing boats. Fishing is available at the Tarn. There is a small camping and caravan site, and a permanent orienteering course is laid out around the park. The shop hires mountain bikes and there are suggested routes taking you through beautiful countryside. There is a 1.3 mile path round the tarn which is suitable for wheelchairs.

Situated between The Northern Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and The Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site – with the spectacular Lake District less than an hour’s drive away – there is so much to explore.

Lanercost Priory

Nestled in a beautiful and tranquil setting just a stone’s throw from Farlam Hall. The beautiful and now tranquil setting of Augustinian Lanercost Priory belies an often troubled history.

Standing close to Hadrian’s Wall, it suffered frequent attacks during the long Anglo-Scottish wars, once by Robert Bruce in person. The mortally sick King Edward I rested here for five months in 1306-7, shortly before his death on his final campaign.

Yet there is still much to see in this best-preserved of Cumbrian monasteries. The east end of the noble 13th-century church survives to its full height, housing within its dramatic triple tier of arches some fine monuments.
