The town of Dartmouth is host to plenty of fun activities for everyone all year round. Explore the shops, restaurants and cafes of the winding Elizabethan streets, take a boat out for some sailing or fishing, or simply relax on one of the many unspoilt beaches.
Just a short drive from the coast visitors often spent a day or two out at local beaches, namely South Sands, Dawlish Warren, Bantham and Teignmouth. During the summer months the Devon beaches emulate a Mediterranean climate and also have lifeguards on hand to keep beach safety secure.
‘The loveliest place in the world’ is what author Agatha Christie said about Greenway House, a treasured holiday home to her and her family for many years. Now a part of the National Trust, the the house and gardens are open to visitors year round and you can explore the collections five generations of her family accumulated.
This 1920s retreat, less than an hour’s drive from Buckland Tout-Saints, is a great day out for all ages. Explore the National Trust property, from reliving the Jazz Age through music and dressing up in the main house, to discovering nature in the beautiful gardens. A short drive off the A30 and you will arrive at Okehampton Castle nestled in the foothills of Dartmoor. The castle is one of the largest in the county and dates back to the Norman Conquest with its striking motte and bailey features. The castle provides visitors with audio tours to bring its history to life, and the rumoured ghost stories are shared with all that dare to listen. Less than an hour from the hotel is Plymouth, one of Britain’s most vibrant waterfront cities. The cobbled streets are home to quaint cafés, independent shops, galleries, and brilliant bars and restaurants. Just a 27 minute drive to Overbeck’s, the seaside home of inventor and scientist Otto Overbeck. His gardens and house are perched high on the cliffs above Salcombe, with glorious views over the estuary and coast. Walking through the garden is like taking a trip around the world. With palm trees, banana plants, citrus and olive trees, you could easily forget for a moment where you are and expect to see a parrot flying up above.
The house too is full of surprises. A magical polyphon (A disc playing music box) still plays, and cabinets of butterflies and bugs sit happily with collections of dolls, toys and model boats. Cookworthy Museum was opened in 1972 in the old Kingsbridge Grammar School building to collect and record the social history of the area. The Museum was named after William Cookworthy, who was born in Kingsbridge, and who developed the first true hard-paste porcelain (“china”).
The Museum facilities now include: displays of artefacts from the early history of Kingsbridge through to the present day, a gallery of agricultural machinery and tools, a collection of photographs dating from the 1870’s through to the present day and costumes from the 19th and 20th centuries
