For four decades, since 1982, Pride of Britain Hotels has been carefully curating its collection of the finest properties. Each of the independent hotels is unique and characterful, offering guests varied adventures and opportunities to explore the UK. Whether one is looking for a sumptuous spa experience, a quintessential English country house, a smart city bolthole, a luxury small ship cruise or a baronial castle Pride of Britain Hotels has the best, tried and tested places at which to dine, stay and unwind.
How the story began
Gerald Milsom, OBE, founded Pride of Britain Hotels, representing some of Britain’s finest independent hotels, in 1982, in response to what he saw as a need for a UK-specific hotel marketing organisation.
Today, Gerald’s son, Paul Milsom, owner of Talbooth House & Spa (formerly Maison Talbooth) in Essex, is following in his father’s footsteps as Pride of Britain Hotels’ Life President, having been appointed to the role in January this year in recognition of his unique and longstanding contribution to the consortium.
“From our humble beginnings in 1982 as a marketing consortium formed by a small group of British hoteliers, led by industry titan Gerald Milsom, to the present day – through a changing world and a changing industry – the central motivation of our not-for-profit organisation has been two-fold. Firstly, the desire to represent the very finest of British hotels; operated by some of the finest hoteliers and most caring families. And, secondly, to be an inspiring and distinguished voice to those as obsessed with quality and outstanding experiences as we are. Today, our expertly-curated selection of independent hotels represents the most exceptional examples of great service, location, design, food & drink, wellness – and experiences – on offer across the British Isles.”
– Kalindi Juneja, Pride of Britain’s CEO
Members’ musings: what being a Pride of Britain Hotels member means to the hoteliers
“For Gravetye Manor, it is a privilege to be amongst a select few hotels associated with Pride of Britain, an exclusive group of some of the very best independent hotels in the UK. Being a member of this prestigious association is a great indicator to potential customers that they will enjoy the highest standards of hospitality at Gravetye Manor, and creating special memories for our valued guests.”
– Paul Skinner, General Manger, Gravetye Manor
“Pride of Britain means so much to us and we value it immensely. I love the fact that we are such an exceptionally close-knit community of hoteliers who sincerely aim to deliver true excellence in British hospitality. We enjoy our time together and share the same day-to-day operational challenges; we share ideas and we solve problems, which is a comfort for so many of us. Being a hotelier is sometimes a lonely place; being part of this family, and supporting one another, is exactly where we want to be.”
– Neil Kedward, Owner, Grove of Narberth
“Gilpin is proud to be a part of Pride of Britain Hotels – a uniquely British collection focusing on hospitality, luxury and individuality. The marketing results are transparent and published monthly, and, given the fees, represent a good return on investment for us.”
– Barney Cunliffe, Owner & CEO, Gilpin Hotel & Lake House
“I have been associated with Pride of Britain Hotels for over 20 years. In that time, I have seen the consortium evolve into the organisation that it is today, which proudly brings together some of the very best hotels in the UK. There is no doubt that the profile of Pride of Britain Hotels has risen hugely in recent years, thanks to its continued drive for excellence. I would also add that the support for member hoteliers goes above and beyond the marketing element, often hugely supported by sponsors and associates. It truly feels like family.”
– Michele Mella, General Manager & Director, Barnsley House
“My family has owned and managed the Thurlestone Hotel for over 126 years. During this time much has changed, but the fundamentals remain – that we wish to give every guest the highest levels of hospitality and service and to treat each one as a returning friend. POB Hotels fits with this ethos and, for this reason, we are proud to be associated with them.”
– Tim Hassell, Estates Director, Thurlestone Hotel
“On the 40th year anniversary celebrations of Pride of Britain Hotels, Grantley Hall is just as proud today to be part of the Pride of Britain collection as on the day we opened our doors, back in 2019. It’s encouraging to be part of an organisation that champions excellence in luxury, family-owned hotels and is therefore in keeping with our values as one of the leading five-star properties in the UK.”
– Andrew McPherson, General Manager, Grantley Hall
“We are very proud of our association with Pride of Britain and feel very privileged to work with such a prestigious partner. Sending our congratulations on the collection on its 40th anniversary and looking forward to the next 40 years.”
– David Scott, CEO of The Hotel Folk, which owns and runs The Swan at Lavenham Hotel and Spa
“It is an honour for Hambleton Hall to be associated with such a special collection of individual properties, all run by talented and inspirational teams, striving to give the ultimate experience to all of our guests. POB Hotels epitomises the best in hospitality and is going from strength to strength.”
– Chris Hurst, General Manager, Hambleton Hall
“It is a privilege to be part of Pride of Britain Hotels. For us to be included in this elite collection of properties not only positions Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa as one of the UK’s leading luxury, independently owned hotels, but it also gives us the opportunity to work alongside other like-minded hoteliers, sharing knowledge and best practice.”
