In the 16th century a vicarage was built next to the unique twin-towered church of St Mary's. It was partly constructed from a much older monastery, and some of the original stonework can still be seen.
In the early years of this century, the house was moved to its present location, just 400 yards away, and was later reborn as The Pear Tree at Purton, a handsome country house built of Cotswold stone. The Pear Tree at Purton is surrounded by the rolling hills of Wiltshire's famous Vale of the White Horse, and lies not far from the fabled source of the river Thames.
The peaceful atmosphere is enhanced by sunny conservatories, which house the hotel's restaurant, and by views over flower-filled gardens and green meadows from the bedroom windows. Each room is named after a character associated with the village.
Guests can tour the Cotswolds, visit Blenheim Palace and other historic homes or explore the city of Bath. The more energetic can walk over miles of pretty footpaths, or try their hand at croquet, golf and tennis, while those who prefer to take things gently can relax in the gardens, enjoying the scent of stocks, roses and thyme.
