The house dates back to the 18th century, and has a long and fascinating history, which is depicted in a series of colourful murals on the restaurant walls. Its hillside setting and pastoral views make for delightful surroundings. The house is reached along a meandering, wooded driveway, and the smooth lawns, mellow stone and wisteria-clad walls offer a warm welcome to visitors.
The Taw River provides high quality fishing, several fine golf courses offer different challenges, and the hotel can arrange riding and a range of other traditional country sports including falconry, shooting and stalking.
The local race courses of Exeter, Newton Abbot and Taunton are also within easy reach - and of course there are wellington boots in the porch if a long country walk is as active as a guest wants to be.
