This romantic Berkshire county is a stone’s throw away from London, with a wealth of towns and villages to visit on a day out or short break.
The county is famous for its Royal connections with the River Thames that meanders through the county. There are a range of river activities from planned tours on the river to hiring your own boat for a day on the river. Main attractions are Windsor Castle, Eaton College, Ascot Racecourse and Savill Garden.
The county of Berkshire has recently adopted the slogan, “Kate Middleton Country”.
Since Prince William and Catherine (Kate) Middleton announced their engagement on 23rd November 2011 the area around Bucklebury became known as ‘Kate Middleton Country’. Catherine’s family home is in Chapel Row which is part of Bucklebury parish.
Berkshire is less than an hour’s drive from Heathrow and Southampton airports and is easily accessible from the M3 and is just minutes from the M4 Junction 13.
Pride of Britain’s Luxury Hotel in Berkshire is the French Horn. The riverside inn has stood on this incomparable site for 150 years, alongside the bustling bridges of Sonning. Today, The French Horn still overlooks a picturesque curve of the River Thames, shaded by weeping willows, and graced by swans and moorhens. Softly floodlit at night, the gardens offer a romantic riverside setting for summer dining, and pretty views on a chilly winter’s night.
The French Horn has charming bedrooms, including converted riverside cottages, and is most famous as a “Restaurant with Rooms”, with one of the finest wine cellars to be found in England. A particular speciality of the house is the spit-roasted local duck, which turns in front of the open fire in the bar.
A pretty private dining room adjoins the main restaurant, which in turn opens on to the sweeping lawns down to the river – an ideal setting for an intimate dinner, or a perfect Sunday lunch.
Situated a stone’s throw from Henley-on-Thames, The French Horn is also ideally located for racing at Ascot, Sandown, Windsor and Newbury. Walks and golf courses abound nearby.
