One of England’s first ‘country house’ hotels, Maison Talbooth, near Colchester in Essex, re-opens this weekend after a six-month £1.5 million building programme.

The 12-bedroom former Edwardian rectory now features three new spacious and contemporary-design bedroom suites, three new Dermologica treatment rooms (including one for couples), and an outdoor swimming pool complex with covered barbecue stoop-deck, outdoor hot-tub and poolside dining room.

Double rooms cost £190 per night midweek (£220 weekends) including continental breakfast, while the best room – the sumptuous new Betjeman suite – costs £250 midweek (£300 weekends).
