About Judges Country House Hotel

Judges Country House Hotel was built on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors in 1881 as a family residence. In the 1970s the building was transformed into a country lodging for circuit court judges - hence the name. The carefully restored house, replete with glossy Victorian woodwork, has a comfortable, clubby atmosphere that is known to play havoc with guests' short-stay plans! Adding to its charm are the lovely gardens, with their sunny terraces, Victorian walled garden where fruit and vegetables are grown for the kitchens, and extensive woodland walkways.

Judges Country House Hotel is a delightful getaway for families, couples and business travellers. Special break packages such as 'Bubbly Bygone', 'Romantic Break' and 'Valentine' are available. Hotel bedrooms come equipped with free internet access and MP3 docks. Judges Country House Hotel is a terrific base for exploring the Yorkshire Moors, visiting the ancient abbeys of Rosedale and Rievaulx or Mount Grace Priory, as well as the coast at Whitby. Fossil-hunting is a must, and Captain Cook is celebrated with his own museum and monument.

Yorkshire's Castle Howard

Yorkshire's finest historic house and estate and home to the Howard family for over 300 years is Castle Howard. Much more than a visitor attraction, it's a thriving rural estate with traditional farming and forestry enterprises within it. Set within 1,000 acres of beautiful landscape in the Howardian Hills, the 18th century dwelling is a great day out for all the family. The estate is just under an hour from the hotel if you head north on the A19.

Yorkshire's HMS Endeavour

Also known as HM Bark Endeavour, the HMS Endeavour is the only full-size replica of the Captain James Cook in the Northern hemisphere and one of only two such vessels in the world. Once aboard it's possible to get guided tours from the knowledgeable staff who can give you a feel for what sea life was like in the 18th Century. Souvenirs are available to buy from the shop as a memento of your visit.

Darlington's Railway Museum

Just a half hour drive away from the hotel is the Head of Steam, Darlington Railway Museum which is on the 1825 route of the original Stockton and Darlington Railway. On site are many 1830s heritage buildings that can be explored. Exhibits include George Stephenson's Locomotion No. 1. The museum is also a dedicated research centre with an extensive collection of photographs and books. More information about admission fees and exhibits can be found on their website.
