Charlton House
Somerset

Charlton House is just about as far away from the stuffy, uptight country house hotel of old as you can get. Nestling peacefully on the edge of a Somerset market town, this atmospheric country house has retained the attention to detail of yesteryear but has so cleverly combined it with luxurious, stylish design and a gorgeous Spa. It is privately owned by Roger Saul the founder of the British luxury design brand Mulberry and his wife Monty.

Comfortable drawing rooms are the perfect place to unwind and catch up on inviting sofas and armchairs upholstered in an interesting mix of tweeds, silks, tapestries, leathers and suede. A good night’s sleep is on offer in one of 25 individually designed bedrooms, some with dramatic four-poster beds and all featuring atmospheric bathrooms, goose feather pillows and duvets, and handmade spa products.

In Monty’s Spa, you’ll be greeted with vibrant colours and intuitive therapists – a rich, magical bohemian environment for anyone who needs some ‘me’ time. An indoor/outdoor ozone treated hydrotherapy pool with built in massaging beds, Finnish sauna, Crystal Steam room, Laconium and Experience showers will ensure a blissed out state before treatments.

The arrival of Elisha Carter in September 2006 saw the reinvention of the Sharpham Park restaurant menu. Elisha, described as “a young chef of mercurial genius” by Giles Coran of The Times left the bright lights of London, where he wowed the critics at Lola’s in Islington to create a new and imaginative menu featuring Sharpham Park and local West Country produce, including spelt and organic rare breed meat from Roger & Monty’s nearby farm.
